***I have had the pleasure of getting to know Charlie Wilson, the Great Grandson of Cyrus Matterson Wilson, through email. Charlie has written a manuscript about his Wilson family which mainly revolves around his Grandfather, Simeon Wilson. He has graciously granted me permission to use an excerpt from his manuscript in which he describes the Old Wilson/Hopper Homestead.***
EXCERPT OF CHARLIE WILSON'S MANUSCRIPT
The old Wilson homestead, is located just outside of Russell Springs, Kentucky, on the land of distant relative Mr. Selby Hopper. His son, R. B. Hopper will no doubt inherit this land. The old home's original construction was of roughly hewn logs as were many of the homes of that era. Just when the Wilson home was built is difficult to ascertain, but it did, in some point and time, go through some structural modifications. A room was added and boards were later placed over the logs. I have had the pleasure of visiting the old home on two occasions. Once with my Aunt Marjorie Sutton of Lexington, Kentucky and a few years later with my Dad. I shall never forget this trip to "Old Kaintuck" with my Dad as this was, for both of us, a genealogical pilgrimage if you will. It was a trip I shall always cherish and remember. Mr. Selby Hopper was very hospitable and kind enough to show us around the old home as much as we wanted.
The house had an attic which was the most interesting feature of the place, and I also understand that this is where my Grandfather, Simeon Wilson, slept as a young lad. In the attic, there are old photos, trunks with clothes, letters and other items. An old spinning wheel is usually the first thing that catches ones eye upon ascent into the attic. The attic is actually comprised of two separate rooms divided by a narrow staircase, the only means of access to the attic. The lower level of the home is now being used as a storage area for old discarded junk. **My Dad said that he had heard from someone in Russell County, Kentucky, that the old Wilson home was built in 1802 which would substantiate my previous guess that it had been built by Moses Wilson.**
Generally, the old home is in disrepair and could certainly use much renovation although, the main structure appears to be basically sound. I fully well expect this house will eventually be torn down someday. I hope that will not be the case. In any event, I'm quite glad that I took numerous photos from many angles. It was in this house that Simeon E. Wilson was born and, in all probability, his father Cyrus M. Wilson. My guess would be that Moses Wilson Jr. built this house, but cannot be certain of that.
Not too far from the old home on the property of another distant relative, a Mr. Charlie Wilson, is situated the old Wilson graveyard. This graveyard has not obviously been tended to in many years as it is grown up in weeds, briars, underbrush and small trees. In fact this small family plot would not even be recognizable as a graveyard, until one trips or stumbles over a headstone. It was quite by accident that I discovered the over-turned headstone of Sampson Wilson, grandfather of our Simeon Wilson. It was really sad and disheartening for me to see the final resting place of some of our ancestors in such a state of neglect.
Excerpt Courtesy of Charlie Wilson
***Charlie believes that possibly Cyrus M Wilson was born in this house. Cyrus being the brother of Moses (Bud) Wilson, leads me to believe that this is also where my great-grandfather Bud Wilson was also born. The headstone of Sampson Wilson that he found overturned in the graveyard, would be the stone of the father of both Cyrus and Bud Wilson.***
