RAYBURN FAMILY
Stephen RAYBURN was born on November 4th, 1838 in Kentucky according to the 1850,1860 Federal Census and he died July 1st, 1888. The 1850 census has him listed living with his mother, Jane, who was head of household, birthplace is listed as Kentucky. Siblings listed on the 1850 census are George, Francis, Mack and Ellmore.
The 1860 Federal Census list Jane born 1817/1820 as head of household, occupation; washerwoman, along with Stephen age 21, born in Kentucky, occupation; boatman, George age 19, born in Kentucky, occupation; boatman, Francis age 16, born in Ohio, occupation; prostitute, Macneal age 15, born in Illinois, Elmer age 11, born in Ohio and Mary A. age 5, born in Ohio. Since Jane was listed as head of household in 1850, I'm not sure whose child Mary A is, that showed up on the 1860 census, although she is listed as a Rayburn. I was assuming Jane was a widow, but it could be that Mr. Rayburn lived elsewhere. This is under investigation.
Jane Rayburn is found again in the 1880 Federal Census listed as a "Pensioneer", widow, living in the household of Jefferson Davis in Portsmouth, Ohio. Also in the household is Francis the wife of Jefferson Davis (I'm sure this is Francis the daughter of Jane), Mary Rayburn listed as daughter of Jane Rayburn, age 28 and son Albert Rayburn age 31, occupation Laborer, divorced and birthplace as Ohio. Where this son came from and why he wasn't on prior census records is a mystery at this point. Any further information or research on this family will need to be done in person, in Portsmouth, Ohio so it will be under investigation until then.
Martha Elizabeth POOR was born March 19th, 1839 in Bloomfield Township, Jackson County, Ohio to Greenville and Morning (Frasure) POOR. The 1850 Federal Census shows Green and Morning Poor (both born in Virginia) living in Jackson County, Franklin Township, Ohio with children: John, Nancy, Alexander, Gabriel, Elizabeth (Martha) and and William Poor. Martha was married to David Radcliff on June 3rd, 1856 in Scioto County, Ohio. David Radcliff was born October 17th, 1838 and died September 16th, 1875 in St Peter, Nicollet County, Minnesota. They had three children, John who was born before 1857, Stephen Francis born March 15th, 1857 and Josiah Thomas who was born in 1858. David Radcliff was also a soldier in the civil war. Martha went on to marry Stephen Rayburn in 1864. There is no record of children John or Josiah Thomas Radcliff after this time. The 1870 Federal Census records show Stephen Francis (S.F. Ratclif) Radcilff residing with Stephen and Martha Rayburn.
Stephen Rayburn married Martha E. Poor on May 6th, 1864. According to different Federal Census records, Martha was born anywhere between 1841-1849. She died on December 9th, 1938 and was reported to be 104 years old. It is clear that her date of birth was really not known, since according to the census records, she couldn't have been 104 years of age in 1938, she would have had to have been born in 1834 for that to be the case, so it was impossible for her to be 104 years old at the time of her death.. She did get close to being 100 though and it is said that she smoked well up into her 90's before her family made her give it up.
Stephen Rayburn appears in the 1870 Federal Census listed as Stephen Raborn, head of household, along with wife Martha. His age is listed as 29 and hers as 25. He is listed as being employed at the Rollmill and Martha as keeping house. Once again, the ages are not matching what is given in prior census records. His birthplace is listed as Illinois and Martha's as Ohio. It seems as if Stephen's birthplace also varies depending on the census. I've seen him born in Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois. There is also a child listed as living with them in the household by the name of S. F. Ratclif age 12 and Laura Raborn age 2.
Martha and Steven Rayburn were listed on the 1880 Federal Census. Steven (Stephen) was 41 and occupation was roll mill worker. His parents are both listed as being born in Ohio, as is he. Martha is listed as being 34 years old and her parents listed as being born in Ohio as is she. Children on this census include, Laura: age 11, Nellie: age 5, Henry: age 3 and Maggie: age 6 months.
Martha Rayburn is listed on the 1900 Veterans Schedule Census as the widow of Stephen Rayburn, Civil War Veteran. She is also listed in the 1900 Federal Census, living with her daughter Lettie Mathes and son Harry in Cincinnati, Ohio as head of household. Her age was listed as 51 years old (again another discrepancy) and she had 8 children, 5 still living (which would include John, Stephen Francis and Josiah Thomas Radcliff along with Laura, Henry, Nellie, Maggie and Lettie Rayburn). At that time, John and Josiah Thomas were known to have been deceased. I do know that in 1900, Lettie, Henry/Harry and Nellie were living, so I'm not sure if the other deceased child would have been Laura or Maggie/Margaret.
In 1910 we find Martha and Nellie on a Federal Census for the City Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio. Both are listed as occupation, laundress. Martha being listed as 65 years old and Nellie as 30 years old. Martha's parents are listed as being from Kentucky and Ohio. Another 1910 census has Martha listed as mother in law in the household of her son in law (can't make out his first name, but his last name appears to be Ryan ) and Nellie, daughter age 30. Martha is listed as being 62 and Nellie 30. Nellie is listed as being married 2 times and married 2/12 months at the time of the census. The census taken at the hospital has her listed as a widow. On this 1910 census record, Martha's parents are listed as being from: Unknown and "Irish"
1920 Federal Census has Martha listed as 73 years old. Her parents birthplaces are listed as West Virginia on this census. She is listed on this census under the household of Frank and Lettie Carrier and Lettie's son, Ernest Mathes. Nellie Ryan is also listed as head of household with Martha. Both are listed as widowed.
1930 Federal Census has Martha listed as 89 years old, living in the household of son in law James Murphy and daughter Nellie and their adopted son, Ernie (biological son of Mary Tillet who married Martha's grandson, Ernest Mathes). This census shows that Nellie was first married at age 19, so therefore she was married prior to the Ryan spouse and might account for the fact that she was listed as a widow in the 1910 Census taken while working at the City Hospital. This census has Martha's parents listed as being from Ohio.
After the death of Stephen Rayburn in July of 1888, it was said that Martha was unable to take care of all of her children. Since there was no place in the Civil War Veterans Children Home for these children, Margaret and Letitia were sent to live in a prison for women. I'm not sure where this prison was, it could have been the women's prison in Columbus, Ohio. Lettie remained there until she was between age 16-17. 1900 Federal Census shows Lettie as 18 years old and married 1 year.
Stephen Rayburn served in the Civil War between 1861 and 1865 as a Private with Company A in the 30th Ohio Infantry.
Organized August 28th, 1861, under Colonel John Groesbeck, who was soon succeeded by Colonel Hugh Ewing, it served in West Virginia, in detachments, until August, 1862, when it was transferred to the Army of the Potomac and participated in the battles of Centerville, South Mountain and Antietam. In January, 1863, the Regiment joined Grant's Army near Vicksburg, and took part in the investment of that stronghold. After the surrender it pursued Johnston to Jackson; returning went into camp at Black River. The 30th moved with Sherman to Tennessee and assaulted Mission Ridge. In January, 1864, it re-enlisted, and after a furlough to Ohio, joined Sherman's Atlanta campaign, and participated the battles of Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Ezra Chapel, Jonesboro and Lovejoy's Station. It followed Sherman to the sea and took part in the successful assault on Fort McAllister, and after the fall of Savannah marched through the Carolinas on to Washington. It proceeded to Louisville in June, and to Arkansas in July, 1865, when it soon after returned to Ohio, and was mustered out August 22nd, 1865.
While on his way home from work one evening in July of 1888, he was robbed and murdered. He was found in the Scioto River. The source is the Scioto Times. The children of Martha POOR and Stephen RAYBURN were: Laura, Henry, Nellie, Margaret, and Letitia (Lettie).
Letitia (Lettie) RAYBURN was born in Ohio on April 24th, 1882 and died December 20th, 1975. She was married to 1. Ernest William MATHES and 2. Frank CARRIER. She was the daughter of Stephen RAYBURN and Martha POOR.
