Chesley COFFEY was born between 1720 and 1730 and died before 1760 in North Carolina. He married Jane CLEVELAND between 1740-1750. Their child was Nebuzaradon COFFEY.
Nebuzaradon COFFEY was born in 1757 in Virginia to Chelsey and Jane COFFEY, and died 1797 in Kentucky. He was married to Elizabeth HAYS before 1780, Their child was Hayes COFFEY.
Hayes COFFEY was born in 1793 to Nebuzaradon and Elizabeth COFFEY, and died in 1860 and is buried in Square Oak Cemetery in Ono, Kentucky. He was married to Mary BURKETT who was born in 1798 and died in 1860. Their child was Fielding Gatewood COFFEY.
Fielding Gatewood COFFEY was born January 3rd, 1819 to Hayes and Mary COFFEY, and died June 8th, 1889 and is buried in Square Oak Cemetery, Ono, Kentucky. He was married to Sarah Jane HUGHES who was born on February 22nd 1828 and died May 14, 1896. Their child was Victoria J. COFFEY.
Victoria J COFFEY was born 03/13/1848 to Fielding and Sarah Jane COFFEY, and died on 05/20/1931. She was the daughter of Fielding COFFEY and Sarah Jane HUGHES. Victoria COFFEY married Elias J SMITH born 1845 and died about 1885.
FAMILY OF ELIAS J. SMITH
George A SMITH born about 1805 in Kentucky and married to Talitha ELLIS who was born about 1815. Talitha was the daughter of Peter ELLIS and Nancy COOK originally from Union County, South Carolina. It is thought that the parents of Peter ELLIS were Edmond and Mary ELLIS of South Carolina. There is a Kentucky Land Grant listed for George A Smith, surveyed on 12/4/1832 in Russell County for 56 acres on Beaver Creek. The children of George A and Tabitha were listed on the 1850 Federal Census as: Reuben, Mary J, Margaret, Elizabeth, Serilda, Elias and William.
Elias J SMITH was born about 1844 to George and Talitha SMITH. Date of death is somewhere between 1880-1885. He was married to Victoria COFFEY.
Addie Melvin SMITH was born October 14th, 1880 in Eli, Russell County, Kentucky and died September 6th, 1948. Addie was the son of Victoria COFFEY SMITH and Elias J SMITH. Addie married Cloda (Clodie) Affie WILSON (see CLODA WILSON page) who was born on August 14th, 1886 and died September 6th, 1976 in Franklin, Indiana.
VICTORIA COFFEY SMITH
NOTES FOR VICTORIA AND ELIAS SMITH
Victoria and Elias were married January 22nd 1867 according to the Russell County Marriage Record. They were married at the home of M Marryfield of Russell County in the presence of John Hill and Lousia Marryfield and others, by S.P. Collins J.P. Permission was given for Victoria J COFFEY by F.G. COFFEY. Bond dated January 23, 1867 and signed by Elias SMITH and Spencer B HUGHES.
The 1880 Federal Census of Russell County Kentucky, list Elias SMITH age 35 and occupation is that of Farmer. Birthplace of his parents is Kentucky. Wife Victoria, age 31, birthplace Kentucky, along with children Laura, Artitle, Oliver, Emma J and Ida M.
Son Addie Melvin SMITH was born October 14th, 1880. Somewhere between 1880 and 1885, Elias SMITH died and a Widows Pension was applied for in 1885 by Victoria COFFEY SMITH. The gravestone of Elias SMITH says "Troop C 8th Ky Cav. (See Veterans of War page)
In 1890 Victoria COFFEY SMITH, married Andrew J Stephens and their daughter Pearl Stephens was born in 1891.
